Sustainable Development of the Cities

Towards Blue-Green Economy

September 18, WED  /  16:00 - 17:15

Increasing the level of sustainable urban development has recently become one of the key global trends. More than 40% of the world's population lives in the BRICS countries, with approximately 1.5 billion people living in urban agglomerations. It is necessary to strengthen cooperation among cities of the BRICS countries to promote the global sustainable growth based on social justice, ecological balance and climate resilience. We need to build a partnership between cities based on equality and trust in order to achieve the 11th UN Sustainable Development Goal: Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

It is crucial to implement the principles of the circular economy, renewable energy development and investment policy to attract the investment in small and medium-sized businesses. Climate change adaptation measures and international trade development also play an important role.

Cities of the Future should not only be innovative and technologically ‘smart’, but also ‘green’. The wildest and most remote places on Earth, the most threatened species, the chain of life that sustains human life on our planet, will only be protected if citizens would take care of the unique nature of the world.

It is necessary to focus on spheres such as infrastructure, ecology, innovative technologies, economy and finance, international cooperation and the role of the humans in the Cities of the Future.
