at BRS COPs

From 28 April to 9 May 2025, under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Meetings of the Conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (BRS COPs 2025) will be held in Geneva, Switzerland. The theme of the meetings and the high-level segment will be “Make visible the invisible: sound management of chemicals and wastes”.

As part of the BRS COPs programme, the official Ecumene side event titled “New strategies for dealing with microplastics as a potential threat to humans and the natural environment” will take place at the Geneva International Conference Centre (CICG).

Programm:

ROUNDTABLE 18:15 – 19:45 GENEVA / 19:15 – 20:45 MOSCOW

New strategies for dealing with microplastics as a potential threat to humans and the natural environment

The thematic focus is the growing number of invisible plastic particles (below 5mm) distributed in the different environmental matrices (water, soil, air) and closely related to the increasing pollution of the planet by plastic waste, is currently one of the most debated environmental topics attracting widespread public attention. The main focus will be on novel scientific knowledge, innovative solutions to detect, prevent, and mitigate the spread of microplastics, exploring technological advances, policy measures, and collaborative efforts to address this global problem. Balanced, responsible, effective, and sustainable solutions to the microplastics problem can only be found through an open approach based on scientific knowledge, new technological solutions, and balanced regulation relevant to plastics and their impact on human health, the environment, biodiversity conservation, and climate change, taking into account the following aspects:
1. To present the latest scientific research on microplastics’ sources, distribution, detection and environmental and health impacts.
2. To highlight new technologies and strategies for reducing microplastic pollution, such as advanced filtration systems, plastic wastes management, biodegradable polymer alternatives and other eco-friendly materials.
3. To encourage collaboration between governments, industry, researchers, and civil society in scaling effective solutions.
4. To explore policy frameworks and regulations aimed at managing microplastics pollution at the global, regional, and national levels.
5. To raise awareness on the importance of reducing plastic use and increasing public participation in waste management and recycling.

Welcome speech on behalf of H.E. Mr. Gennady Gatilov – Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva.
