Welcome speeches were delivered by Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General, UN Geneva; Gennadiy Gatilov, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva; and Svetlana Radionova, Head, Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources.

The round tables brought together leading experts to discuss key environmental and sustainable development issues. Representatives of international organizations, government bodies, the scientific community, business and public organizations took part in the discussions.

The programme comprised five thematic sessions: “Transition Towards Sustainable Economic Development,” “Plastic Pollution: Polymer Science and Effective Recycling Systems for Plastics Waste Regulation,” “Water: Time to Build Bridges,” “Era of New Technological Innovations,” and “Global Leaders 2050.” Participants discussed the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the development of a sustainable economy and new technologies, plastic-waste management, water diplomacy and international cooperation, as well as the role of the younger generation in shaping the future sustainable development agenda.

Particular attention was paid to shaping new UN goals for the period after 2030, preparations for a new UN convention on plastic, the global water crisis and climate change, as well as the potential use of artificial intelligence and other new technologies.
